[edit] History
From Jarvis, Nancy H., editor. Historical Glimpses Petoskey, p. 60:
Another pioneer merchant was Adolph (Ad) Fochtman, who moved his famly from St. Marys, Pennsylvania in 1878. A merchant for 15 years prior to moving here, Fochtman purchased a wood-framed store building at 422 East Mitchell from John Wachtel, not far from the tracks of the new railroad, wrote his son, Lewis Fochtman, in a short family history:
"The new business was known as the 'Ad Fochtman Store' and the lines carried gradually expanded to include groceries, salt, meats, boots and shoes, yard goods, accessories, blankets and bedding," his son wrote, "The eleven Fochtman children all served an apprenticeship in their father's business during those early years."
In 1904, the original wooden building was moved south a few hundred feet and fronted on Michigan Street. A newer, three-story brick building was erected on the Mitchell Street lot by the Koepke Brothers Construction Company, the same firm which later built St. Francis Catholic Church. Ad Fochtman eventually turned over his business to his oldest son, Albert, who became president; Eugene, the merchandise manager; and Wilburt, the food department supervisor.
