Killed on Van Road
HARBOR SPRINGS-A 40-year-old Harbor Springs resident was killed Saturday afternoon when he was struck by a car while riding a motorcycle north of Harbor Springs.
Art L. Shepler, of Robinson rd. in Harbor Springs, was killed about 4:40 p.m. Saturday when he was struck by a car driven by Timothy J. Miller, 25, also of Harbor Springs.
The Emmet County Sheriff's department reports Shepler was westbound an Van rd. about one mile west of Canby rd. with another motorcyclist, Eugene Bosma, 20, of Harbor Springs. Deputies say Bosma ran out of gas and when Shepler noticed his partner was stopped he also stopped and turned around.
Shepler turned back and in the process cut in front of the Miller vehicle traveling east on Van-rd. The car then struck the motorcyclist who was on the wrong side of the road.
Bosma witnessed the accident, according to deputies.
Graveside service for Shepler was held at 2 p.m. today at the Readmond Township cemetery under the auspices of BPOE 629, Petoskey.
Mr. Shepler was born Jan, 18, 1937 in Carson City. On June 29, 1963, he married the former Sharon Johnston and the couple have made their home in the Harbor Springs area since that time.
Mr. Shepler owned operated his own painting, decorating business in Harbor Springs.
He was a member of BPOE 629 in Petoskey.
Survivors include his widow, three sons, Ronald of Sterling Heights, Ky., Donald of Alma and Joseph of Harbor Springs; two daughters, Mrs. Donald (Charmaine) Ayers of Ayers and Kay Shepler of Alma; his mother, Mrs. Rhea Davis or St. Louis, Mich.; two step-children, Kelli Snively and Kirbv Snively, both of Harbor Springs; three brothers, Bill Shepler of St. Louis, Kenneth Deline of Alma, Randy Shepler of Hubbardston; three sisters, Mrs, Joseph (Stella) Wright of Hubbardston, Mrs. Richard (Judy) Fisher of St. Louis and Mrs. Jack (Linda) Billings of Hubbardston; his step-mother Mrs. Dorothy Shepler of Hubbardston.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Gillian-Erwin Funeral Chapel in Harbor Springs.
