Caroline Luise Christiane Schwerdtfeger was born June 30, 1881 in Sievershausen, Hanover, Germany.
Her parents are Carl Clemens Heinrich August Schwerdtfeger and Caroline Charlotte Amalie Melching.
Lena was the second of seven chidren: Ernestine Caroline Hermine Schwerdtfeger, Frieda Wilhelmine Amalie, Carl Heinrich August, Louise Marie Wilhelmine, Caroline Wilhelmine Anna Johanne, August Wilhelm Heinrich Clemens Schwerdtfeger.
(Gertrude said that her grandmother Caroline Schwerdtfeger was called Lena while her mother Caroline Catob was called Lina. )
Lina married Johann Adolph Chudobba in October 1907 in Harbor Springs, Emmet, Michigan.
They built their home on Third Street in Harbor Springs.
Their children are Karl August Johann, Frieda Marie, Gertrude Caroline and Helene Isobel Catob.
By the accounts of her children, Lina was an adoring mother and wife. Lina died when her children were very young, Gertrude being only 6 years old, at the time. She remembered her grandparents, Schwerdtfeger, coming to get her from Sunday School in a sleigh drawn with a horse. They took the children to the Petoskey hospital to see their mother one last time.
Lena died after a miscarriage in Petoskey, Emmet, Michigan on 19 March 1923. She is buried at the Lakeview Cemetery, Harbor Springs.
