Charles J. Hitchings Jr., 74

Charles J. Hitchings Jr., 74, of Petoskey, died June 17, 1999, at his home in Bear Creek Township.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday, June 21, at Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey. The Rev. David Behling will officiate and burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Charlie was born June 17, 1925, in Petoskey, the son of Charles and Beatrice (Chattaway) Hitchings Sr.

Charlie grew up in Petoskey and attended Petoskey High School.

On Feb. 14, 1948, he married Beatrice Gemmill in Petoskey.

Charlie served in the U. S. Army during World War II in the China-Burma-India Theater. He was attached to the U. S. Army K-9 Corps, working as a dog handler.

After his marriage to Bea in 1948, the couple made their home in Petoskey. Charlie worked most of his life as a meat cutter with several area businesses including, Coeling Meat Packing and the Petoskey IGA.

Charlie was a true horse lover, especially of harness horses.

Charlie was a member of the Michigan Harness Horsemen Association and the United States Trotting Association.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Beatrice; daughter, Diane Gray, of Petoskey; son, Charles III and Lynne Winters, of Petoskey; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; three sisters, Reva (Vil) Atkalns of Petoskey, Connie (Carl) Lawrence of Frederic, Christine Hitchings of Gaylord; two brothers, Arthur (Dorothy) Hitchings of Grand Rapids, and Gerald (Marie) Hitchings of Swartz Creek. Charlie was preceded in death by a son, David J. Hitchings, and by a sister, Margaret "Peggy" Hitchings.

Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of service on Monday, June 21, at Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey.
