[edit] Obituary

Ryan Funeral Service:

VERONA, WI – Charles S. McCauley, 90, of Verona and formerly of Superior Wisconsin, died peacefully and comfortably in the presence of his loving family on Thursday, March 30, 2006, at Four Winds Manor Nursing Home. He was born in Superior on November 19, 1915, the youngest of nine children to Curt and Cora McCauley.

A graduate of Superior East High School, Charlie was employed at the Androy Hotel when he met and subsequently married Bertha Emelia Antilla on June 25, 1937. They would have celebrated their sixty-ninth wedding anniversary this spring.

Charlie was employed for forty years at the “Evening Telegram” newspaper before retiring in 1972. He also worked part time for the Hooper Holmes Bureau for thirty years. He served in the U.S. Army in the latter stages of World War II, stationed at Camp Robinson, Arkansas. During his years in Superior, he avidly enjoyed his summer golf outings and the many friendships that endured over the years and across the miles. During their retirement, Charlie and Bertha finally “headed south” and moved to Madison to be closer to their children. While living in Madison and Verona since 1992 and making many new friends, they always considered Superior to be their home and valued the memories, friendships and experiences of living “up north.” Charlie was always supportive of his family and his friends and traveled many miles to many cities, including Hawaii, California, Florida, Georgia and throughout the Midwest to enjoy the activities of his sons, their friends and their families. His favorite trip was always to the ranch in Delafield.

Survivors include his loving wife Bertha, sons Dr. Charles W. McCauley [Connie] of Delafield, WI, and Thomas M. McCauley [Jana] of Oregon, WI. He is also survived by his devoted grandsons, Alex and Andrew of Oregon. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Ariel, Ernest, James and Richard, and sisters Ruth Roth, Alice Chamberlain, Olive Howard and Ella Jankowski.

Funeral services will be held in Superior. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Superior.

The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the administration and staff of Four Winds Manor Nursing Home. They loved Charlie almost as much as we did and made his last years as comfortable and as enjoyable and fun-filled as possible.
