Petoskey Evening News, June 1937:
Funeral services for David Johnston, well known Readmond township farmer were held Thursday afternoon from the Good Hart church with Rev. Clare E Olin officiating. Interment was made in Readmond township cemetery.
Mr. Johnston died June 14, 1937. He was born in Pennsylvania on March 19, 1867 and when seven years old went to Kilarney, Canada with his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Johnston, where they lived for a short time before going to Walkerton, Ontario. From there they came to Michigan by boat landing at Cross Village in the year of 1873, where Mr. & Mrs. Johnston homesteaded 160 aces known as the Royal Arch farm near Cross Village.
In 1902 David Johnston was married to Miss Mabel Buck and to this union one daughter, Mrs. Rudolf (Margaret) Sterly was born. Following the death of his wife, he was married in 1911 to Mrs. Clara (Pulver) McFarland. During his residence in Readmond township, Mr. Johnston was engaged in farm and lumbering. About 4 years ago his health began to fail and he came to Harbor Springs to make his home with Mr. & Mrs. Sterly of Bluff Drive.
He was highway commissioner and a member of the school board in Readmond for many years. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of American and had filled several chairs.
Surviving are Mrs. Sterly, David Henry Johnston and Clifford D Johnston of Harbor Springs and four step-children; Mrs. Harmon (Clara Belle) Wilcox of Traverse Street; Mrs. Mable Van Camp of Boyne Falls; Grant Frost of Nebraska and Archie Henry McFarland of Harbor Springs; and two brothers, Frank Johnston of Good Hart and Robert Johnston of Cross Village. Eleven grandchildren and g-grandchildren also survive.
Coming from away to attend the services were Mr. & Mrs. Frank Matchett, Robert Matchett and Miss Abbie Matchett of Charlevoix; Mrs. Van Camp of Boyne Falls and daughter, Mrs. Joseph Webber of Boyne City; Mrs. R Griswold of Clarion and Mr & Mrs. Douglas Clintsman of Petoskey.
Acting pallbearers were Seth Terpening, William Perry, George McNamara, George Kruzel, George Dunkley and Walter Readmond.
