Father Flavius Czuba, O.F.M., died at Florida Hospital in Orlando on Easter Sunday of complications following open heart surgery. He was stricken while on vacation with relatives and was hospitalized for about four weeks.
He was born on Nov. 8, 1921, in Clarks, Neb., to Stephen Czuba and Catherine Kush.
Father Flavius entered the Franciscan Order on Aug. 14, 1941, and was ordained to the priesthood Dec. 19, 1947. His first assignment in this area was to St. Francis Xavier in Petoskey in 1958, teaching in St. Francis' schools and serving as pastor to the communities of Larks Lake, Cross Village, and Middle Village. In 1969, he moved to Holy Childhood in Harbor Springs and continued his service as pastor to the three villages.
After various assignments in Nebraska, Illinois and Wisconsin, he came to Indian River in 1993 to serve as senior parochial vicar at the shrine-parish, Cross in the Woods. Father Flavius ministered in the Gaylord Diocese for approximately 22 years. He was a Franciscan for 60 years and a priest for 54 years.
Burial will be in Columbus, Neb. A memorial Mass will be celebrated for him at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at Cross in the Woods, Indian River.
Memorials in his honor may be made to the Cross in the Woods Endowment Fund or the Franciscan Vocation Office.
