[edit] Obituary
Oct 1958
The Harbor Springs community lost one who had made her home here for 58 years when Mrs. Frieda Melching was laid to rest on Saturday afternoon in Lakeview cemetery. She would have been 75 years of age next month.
Services were held at the Presbyterian church with the pastor, Rev. Ronald E. Felty officiating.
Although she had been in poor health for two years, death came suddenly on Wednesday evening.
Born in Hanover, Germany in 1884, she came to America sixteen years later.
In 1905 she was married to A. F. Melching of Harbor Springs, who preceded her in death in 1928.
She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church and for many years was the director of the annual rummage sale of the women's organizations of the church.
By extending credit to many indigent patrons she helped many poor but honest families of the community to secure much needed clothing and house furnishings, as well as adding hundreds of dollars to the church funds.
Survivors are three sisters: Mrs. E. A. Herzog of Chicago; Miss Louise Schwertfeger and Mrs. Johanna Buettner of Petoskey; and a brother August H. Schwertfeger of Harbor Springs.
