George P. Woodruff was born March 11, 1920, in Petoskey, the son of Thomas O. and Georgia M. (Hart) Woodruff. He grew up in Oden and attended school in Alanson.

In September 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. As a member of the Jeopard 87th Army Field Artillery (Bushmaster) Battalion, he served in Panama and saw combat action beginning at Normandy (D-Day) and continuing throughout northern France and central Europe. He was discharged in October 1945 and returned to Oden, where he married Leila Louise Lark on Sept. 16, 1947.

Mr. Woodruff retired in 1983 after serving as Oden’s postmaster. He was a skilled outdoorsman and was active in the Oden Community Church, the Oden Community Association, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2051.
