Gerald B. Carmer of Harbor Springs, died September 28,1986, at Petoskey Geriatric Village after a long illness.
Mr. Carmer, 78, was born in Alma, Michigan on October 8, 1907. He married the former Winifred McVay who preceded him in death in 1956. On May 1, 1965, he married the former Gertrude (Catob) Howse.
For many years Mr. Carmer was a tool & die maker downstate. In the late 50' s he retired and moved north. In an interview with this newspaper several years ago, Mr. Carmer talked about his retirement and his search for a hobby. He became interested in sharpening saws and other like instruments - a spin-off from the tool and die-making. The hobby became a craft - "keeps me from the TV," he commented, but it didn't take up all his time. Mr. Carmer was a friendly man, always ready with a smile and hello. His special craft will be missed here.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a 33 Degree Mason-Shriner.
He is survived by his wife Gertrude, his daughter Mrs. Leroy (Beverly) Dennis on of Muskegon and her three sons Bill, David & Patrick and their children all of Muskegon; three step-children, Mrs. Gerry (Joanne) Swiss of Harbor Springs, Mrs. Dennis (Karlene) Marsh of Manistee and Arnold Howse of Petoskey and their children; five great grand-children 17 step- grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Oct. 1 in Muskegon.

- DLH: Jerry was my step-grandfather, but he was the only grandfather I ever knew on my fathers side and he always treated me as his own grand-daughter. I miss the touch of his brush-cut hair and the sweet smell of his cigars. He was cremated. He said he was of French descent.
