Only one photo was known to have been taken of Gerald when he was alive; because, he was usually at his mother's side whenever she was taking pictures of the children. The photo was taken from a distance and showed no identifiable facial details.
Gerald spent his last two weeks as a patient at St. Joseph's hospital in Sioux City, IA. He passed away as a result of whooping cough and other complications. He was survived by his parents, three brothers, and one sister.
At the time of his death, Gerald's youngest sister, Myrna, hadn't been born yet. When Myrna died, she was buried at St. Joseph Cemetery. She had said that she wanted to be buried there; so, Gerald wouldn't be alone.
