Mrs. Roche Recalls Oden as family arrived 65 years ago

My brother Tom Woodruff who is 82 years old, called and told me that 65 years ago November 4, our parents the late Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Woodruff arrived in Oden from a farm near Geneva, Indiana. With them were six of their seven children now Mrs. Oma Olson Cooper of Cadillac, Mrs. Abbie Rowdon, Calif., the late Robert F. Woodruff, Petoskey, Mrs. Clara Pope, Oden and myself, Mrs. Nellie Stears Roche.

The eldest of the family, the late Charles E. Woodruff remained in Indiana, but joined the family later in the year. The family came by train and shipped a box car load of personal items. The weather was almost identical to what we are now experiencing and was ideal throughout November.

Tom says he and dad dug potatoes for Perry Lile, who at one time operated a large grocery store, for "Cap" Davis' grandfather of Milburn "Cap" Davis and for "Doc" Mrs. Goodrich who owned a farm in the hills back of Oden.

The family lived in and operated an eating place in a store building owned by the late Henry Pope, grandfather of Eva Pope. About a year later dad built the home now owned by Leo Russell. In the summer my mother operated a boarding house and kept roomers and among her customers were Otto Gattle, the Mersmans, parents of Marcella Mersman Haveman, Celina, Ohio, and many others who today own homes here.

Mrs. Majeska Kritcher and Denver Woodruff of Clearwater Beach, Florida, were born after our arrival here. many of our family resided here all of the 65 years.
