Petoskey News-Review, January 14, 2011

James Dietrich Winkworth

James Dietrich Winkworth passed away Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, in Kalamazoo, Mich.

He was born May 2, 1948, in Monroe, Mich., to James Robert and Ursula (Dietrich) Winkworth who met during World War II in Germany, sparking Jim's lifelong interest in international relations.

He graduated from Michigan State University (BA 1970, international relations), where he was elected to senior offices in student government and SAE fraternity. He was also a graduate of Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo (Michigan secondary teaching certificate, 1973) and Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant (MA 1976, educational administration).

Jim taught history and political science at Petoskey High School for nearly 30 years. He was a recognized educational innovator placing students throughout local government as part of a course in Practical Politics. Such creativity synergized with his own election as Emmet County commissioner and chairman of the Emmet County Republican Party.

During a two-year sabbatical leave, Jim was invited to join the faculty of the John F. Kennedy School in Berlin, Germany, where his fluent German and cultural flexibility enabled him to bring key improvements to its Abitur program for university bound students. He also served in leadership roles at Petoskey High School as chairman of the social studies department as well as vice president and president of the Petoskey Education Association.

Following his retirement in 1999, Jim's excellent knowledge and understanding of people portrayed him as a highly gifted professional when he joined the team at Child and Family Services. But, in 2003 Jim's love for international service drew him to a teaching position in Romania where he met Melike, the love of his life. Melike returned with Jim in 2005 to Kalamazoo, where they were married and became involved in university and community life.

Jim will always be remembered as a brilliant, affable man who was sophisticated in the best sense of the word, a true gentleman.

He is survived by his wife, Melike, and German and American aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who loved and admired him.

Jim was an active member of the Kalamazoo Downtown Rotary Club, Kalamazoo.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Kalamazoo Rotary Scholarship Fund, in care of the Kalamazoo Community Foundation, 151 S. Rose St., Kalamazoo, Mich. 49007.
