James O'Connor was born in Ireland to Michael and Elizabeth (Betts) O'Connor.
He spent a probably more than two decades living in Canada, where he married Bridget Jennings west of Montreal on August 7, 1848.
In 1854, he and his wife moved to Wisconsin and settled in the area of Elizabethtown and New Lisbon, where they lived for nineteen years.
James and Bridget were parents to eleven children. They also adopted a child named John McCabe.
The couple and their children eventually moved to Dakota Territory and settled in Union County.
James was preceeded in death by two children, and was survived by his wife and nine children.
James is buried at St. Joseph Cemetery at Emmet, Union County, South Dakota.
