Petoskey News-Review, March 1993:
James R. Winkworth, 76, of Petoskey, died March 19, 1993, at Reus Residential Care Community in Petoskey.
There will be no visitation or funeral. Burial will be in Monroe, Mich.
He was born May 20, 1916, in Monroe, the son of David and Amelia (Upjohn) Winkworth. He attended the University of Michigan and Carnegie Tech. He graduated from Carnegie Tech as one of the first industrial designers in the nation.
Mr. Winkworth served in the U.S. Army 1940-47, receiving the award of Five Battle Stars for combat service from Normandy to victory. He also served as military governor of several German towns being discharged with the rank of major.
In May 1947, he married Ursula Dietrich of Gruenberg, Germany. She preceded him in death in 1970.
In 1970, he married Ernestine Doughty and she died in 1987.
Mr. Winkworth was an award-winning house and landscape designer who was responsible for the tri-level house and cooperative apartment concepts.
He retired in 1973 as U.S. Army Chief of Design responsible for all Army ground vehicles from tanks to trucks to artillery and Jeeps. As design chief, he gained the civilian equivalent of major general.
Survivors include one son, James D. Winkworth and his wife Luise of Harbor springs; one brother, David Winkworth and his wife Mary Lou of Short Hills, N.J.; one sister, Sally White and her husband Paul of Grand Haven; and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were handled by the Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey.
