John Commodore Hickman, 92

On Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, John C. Hickman, longtime resident of Resort Township, passed away at Hiland Cottage in Petoskey.

John was born on March 1, 1916, in Isabella County, the son of Jacob and Ethel (Smith) Hickman. As a young boy John's family moved from Mount Pleasant to the Petoskey area where they made their home.

John married Evelyn Kotesky in September of 1940 and together they made their home in Resort Township, where they raised their two children. John loved farming, raising cattle and tending crops. He also worked for many years at Penn Dixie, retiring finally in the late 1970s.

John was a kind and unassuming man, who loved his family with all of his heart, always doing his best to provide them a warm, loving home. His wife, Evelyn, will forever remember a kindhearted husband who she loved dearly and with whom she spent the best years of her life. His children will remember a dad who always put their needs before his own. His grandchildren will always have the memories of the good times spent at grandma and grandpa's. The winters spent together skating on the rink that grandpa made for them in the backyard. Or those summer days hanging out with grandpa while he tended the garden that gave him so much pleasure and pride, and none of his grandchildren will ever forget those prized wooden whistles and slingshots grandpa whittled for them.

When John wasn't working you might find him enjoying a good book, probably a western by Louis L'Amour, or feeding the birds he enjoyed watching. He also had a real talent when it came to music. He played a mean harmonica and could whistle just about any tune with the best of them. All in all, John had a good, long life and spent that life with the people who made life worth living, his family, and they will dearly miss him.

John is survived by his wife, Evelyn, and their two children, Kenneth and Marilyn (Keith) Danforth; also surviving are his grandchildren, Ron (Amy), Daryl (Dee), Roy (Karin), and Tami (Chris) Liss, as well as Nikki (Brent) Leist and Lindsay Shomin; and several great-grandchildren. His surviving siblings include, Rolland, Jim (Betty) and Rose Billings. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Beatrice Hickman, Mae Dunshee, Lula Schlappi, Nina Daniels and by his brothers, Lawrence, Alton and Herbert.

A funeral service celebrating John's life will take place at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Stone Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The Rev. Ed Warner, pastor of the Stutsmanville Chapel, will officiate and burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
