Petoskey News-Review, Thursday, November 10, 1988:
J. Russell Roe, 81, of Harbor Springs and Jackson, Mich., died Nov. 9, 1988, at St. Josephs Hospital, Ann Arbor.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Schiller Funeral Chapel, Harbor Springs. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Harbor Springs.
Mr. Roe was born in Harbor Springs in 1907. He attended local schools and graduated from Harbor Springs High School.
He was very active in the athletic programs during high school and in the 1920s he received a marine engineer's license and was the youngest marine engineer on the Great Lakes. He was chief engineer on the steamship America, a local ferry boat which served the various resort communities between Harbor Springs and Petoskey. He was also chief engineer on the J. B. John, a freight ship serving the Great Lakes.
Mr. Roe held a B.A. degree. His undergraduate work was done at Eastern Michigan University and Wayne State University and his graduate work was completed at Michigan State University and the University of Michigan.
He had taught in junior colleges in Oakland County and was an instructor and administrator in both elementary and high schools around the state.
He was a member of the Michigan Education Association.
Survivors include: his wife; the former Esther Powers of Harbor Springs; a daughter, Phyllis Kay Roe of Jackson and a brother, James Roe Jr. of Harbor Springs. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Edward Fenton Roe.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Harbor Springs Firefighters. Envelopes for that purpose are available at the Schiller Funeral Chapel where friends may call 7-9 p.m. Friday.
