Petoskey News-Review, Thursday, April 1, 2004:
Joseph Petrowski, 83, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at his home.
"Our country is in mourning, a soldier died today."
The Mass of Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 2, at St. Francis Xavier Church with the Rev. Dennis Stilwell officiating. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. today, Thursday, April 1, at Stone Funeral Home and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service on Friday, April 2, at St. Francis Xavier Church. The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Joseph was born Oct. 11, 1920, in Petoskey, the son of Carl and Margaret Petrowski. He was raised in Petoskey.
During World War II, Joseph served as a rifleman in the Army. He fought in Germany and was later captured and held as a prisoner of war for nine months, being released the day the war ended.
On May 25, 1946, he married the former Margaret Emaline "Peggy" Raumer in Petoskey. She preceded him in death on May 23, 1998.
Joseph worked at Penn-Dixie Cement Plant and was a member of St. Francis Xavier parish, a life member of the V.F.W. and a former member of the Golden Agers.
Joseph loved birds. He liked watching them, enjoyed bird feeders and birdhouses and also enjoyed keeping the squirrels out of his walnut trees. His greatest joy in life was his family. He loved the holidays when his home would be filled with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by two sons, Joseph Swadling of Petoskey and Larry Petrowski of Petoskey; four daughters, Roxann (David) Fettig of Petoskey, Midge Cavagnaro of Harbor Springs, Joetta (Rick) Russell of Midland and Lynne Johnson of Petoskey; one brother, Leo (Betty) Petrowski of Petoskey; two sisters, Marion Swadling of Petoskey and Theresa (John) O'Niel of Petoskey; 20 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, all of whom loved him very much.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Peggy; a son, David; three brothers, Edward, Raymond and George; and a sister, Irene Daniels.
