Lawrence A. Vanliew, 88, of Petoskey, died May 18, 2002, at his residence.
Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, at Epsilon United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dennis Bromley will officiate and burial will be in Curtiss Cemetery.
Lawrence was born Dec. 10, 1913, in Ionia, Mich., the son of Ralph and Maude (Vail) Vanliew. He grew up in Grand Rapids and Petoskey and attended school in Petoskey.
On Feb. 18, 1937, he married Rachael Haley in Barry County, Mich. Rachael preceded him in death on April 6, 1983.
Lawrence lived in Springvale Township until 1952, when they moved to Battle Creek. While in Petoskey, Lawrence worked for the Tannery, sailed on the Great Lakes and worked for H&D. While in Battle Creek, he worked for Walker Homes as a carpenter and then worked for Stryker Corp., in Kalamazoo where he retired from in October 1978. It was at this time he moved back to Springvale Township, where he had lived since.
He loved to hunt and fish and enjoyed woodworking. Lawrence was also a member of Epsilon United Methodist Church.
He is survived by two sons, Dan of Petoskey and Ralph and his wife, Eldy, of Petoskey; two daughters, Marquita Fochtman and her husband, Carl, of Petoskey and Velma Aurand of Battle Creek; 17 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Lawrence H. and James; also by two brothers and a sister.
Contributions in memory of Lawrence may be made to the American Heart Association or American Lung Association. Envelopes will be available at Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey, where friends may call from 6-8 p.m. today, Monday, May 20.
