Marquita Belle Fochtman, 69

Marquita Belle Fochtman, 69, of Springvale Township, died April 20, 2009, at her home.

Marquita was born on March 24, 1940, in Petoskey, the daughter of Lawrence and Rachael Belle (Haley) VanLiew. Marquita moved to Battle Creek at a young age and graduated from Battle Creek Central High school in 1957.

On June 1, 1961, Marquita married her husband of 47 years, Carl Fochtman, in Battle Creek, and he survives. Following Carl’s retirement form the U.S. Armed Forces, the family returned to the Petoskey area and Marquita went to work for Northern Michigan Die Cast, where she continued to work for 21 years, retiring in 2000.

Marquita loved to crochet, knit and go berry picking and mushrooming, and deer hunting. She was loved by all that knew her and will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her husband, Carl; six children, Donna (Charles) Curry of Petoskey, Carla (John) Rudolph of Ann Arbor, Patricia (Martin) Kuks of Grand Rapids, Christopher (Susan) Fochtman of Memphis, Tenn., Laura (Mark) Collins of Memphis, Tenn., and Carl A. Fochtman of Petoskey; 17 grandchildren, Jessica, Jenni, Joe, Lindsay, Martin, Corey, Alisha, Nicole, Samantha, Tiffanie, Alyssa, Patric, Marquita, Anthony, Alexandria, Patrick and Mariah; a great-granddaughter, Autumn Rain; a sister, Velma Aurand of Battle Creek; and by a brother, Ralph VanLiew of Petoskey. She was preceded in death by her parents, and by three brothers, Jim, Lawrence and Daniel VanLiew.

The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, April 23, at the Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of service on Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial donations in Marquita’s memory may be directed to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association.
