Petoskey Evening News, Monday, December 14, 1942:
Mrs. Robert Johnston, most highly esteemed citizen of Readmond Township, passed away Friday morning, December 11, 1942 and was buried Sunday. Mrs. Johnston's fine character as mother and wife was repeatedly expressed by friends in this part of Emmet county. Her loss was felt truly by the whole community which loved her.
Born in Montcalm County on August 27, 1882, she came to Emmet county 52 years ago with her late parents, Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Sheffield.
On May 13, 1900 she was married to Robert Johnston, who passed away several months ago. Mr. and Mrs. Johnston were engaged in farming in Readmond township during their married life.
Surviving are eight children, Mrs. Ray (Berta) Mathews of Harbor Springs, Elmer, Sam, and Mrs. Steve Swiss (Edna) of Good Hart, Roy of Harbor Springs, Earl of Readmond township, Mrs. Herbert Hickman (Irene) of Petoskey and Marvin who lives at home. Nineteen grandchildren also survive together with one sister, Mrs. Minnie Baker of Muskegon and one brother, Alonzo Sheffield who makes his home at the Johnston farm home.
Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 pm from the family home with Rev. Stanley Taylor of the Presbyterian church officiating. Interment was made in Readmond Cemetery.
