Mel and Gladys later divorced.
Melvin married second Catherine Louise Heynig on 24 October 1936 in Harbor Springs, Emmet, Michigan. His brother Raymond married them.
Their children are Helen Louise, Carol Sue and Dr. Gerald Max Howse
Melvin died on 27 October 1964 in Lansing, Ingham, Michigan.
