The following memorial lines were written by the father of Miles Gage, aged 15, who accidently shot himself at the dock at Harbor Springs, October 8, 1904.

Dear Little Miles. can it be true that you have gone to stay?
We Miss you from your daily work; we miss you from your play.
At morning, noon and eventide we miss you from your place.
Oh, how we long to see your form and pleasant, boyish face.

You were a happy, joyous boy--we did not know your worth
Until that cruel gun went off and took you from the earth;
We little thought the day you left our home in merry glee
We never more would have the joy your living form to see.

Oh, when I learned that you were killed I hastened to the spot;
With half-closed eyes and quivering lips you lay as you were shot:
A deadly wound made near the heart from which the blood did flow--
Oh, scenes like this--the parting kiss--none but a parent know.

Your schoolmates and your teachers dear upon your burial day
Brought tokens rare and placed them there where you in silence lay;
With flowers in each little hand--no trace of grief or pain--
Of you, each took a farewell look and went their way again.

Your bat and ball with marbles all are safely laid away,
Just as you placed them, little Miles, before that fatal day.
No more on errands will you go as was your joy of yore--
Oh, how we miss your merry laugh while playing 'round our door.

Your grandma, I and brother Guy are left at home alone,
As brother Jay so far away in distant lands doth roam;
Ours is a sad and lonely home, bereft of one we love.
We trust with mother and with Fay your spirit reigns above.
