[edit] Obituary
Petoskey News Review, Monday, July 19, 2004:
Myrtle Ward, 98, of Harbor Springs, passed away Thursday, July 15, 2004, at Bay Bluffs in Harbor Springs.
A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. today, Monday, July 19, at the United Methodist Church of Harbor Springs. Pastor Kathy Cadarette officiated.
Visitation was held from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
Interment took place in Lakeview Cemetery.
Myrtle was born south of Pellston at a lumbering camp on the Sturgeon River on June 8, 1906. Her parents were James and Sarah (Philips) Howse.
At the age of 8, her family moved to a farm in Harbor Springs that once occupied the property where Bay Bluffs currently sits. She took great comfort in knowing her final years would be spent on the same property that held so many wonderful memories.
On Nov. 11, 1924, she married the love of her life, Dent Ward, in Pellston. The couple made their home in Harbor Springs, where they remained lifelong residents. Dent preceded his wife in death on Sept. 18, 1971.
Myrtle was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She worked as a housekeeper and cook on Harbor Point for 60 years. She was an avid deer hunter, and only gave up hunting at the age of 89 because of failing eyesight. She enjoyed gardening and playing cards. God, family and hard work were the cornerstones of her life. Her spirit will be greatly missed.
Myrtle was a lifelong member of the Harbor Springs United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Emmet County Visiting Club (the oldest women's club in the county). She was also a member of the Emmet County Medical Care Facility Auxiliary.
Myrtle is survived by her three sons, Robert (Donna) of St. Ignace, Leonard of Harbor Springs, Rick (Marge) of Harbor Springs; and her daughter, Dorene (Jack) Sommerville, of Harbor Springs. Also surviving are her 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Colista; a grandson, Denny; and by a granddaughter, Sharon Louise; as well as one sister, four brothers and a daughter-in-law, Dorothy.
The family asks that friends wishing to make a memorial contribution in Myrtle's memory consider the Emmet County Medical Care Facility Auxiliary.
Arrangements were handled by Schiller Funeral Home in Harbor Springs.
