On November 1, 1860, Peter married Regina Cooper in Clinton County, Iowa. The couple moved to Dakota Territory and eventually settled in the Emmet area. Their first house was built from cottonwood slabs; but, they later built a much better house. Peter and Regina had twelve children. The couple later moved to Beresford, SD.
On the day of his death, he was sitting on the back porch, talking to neighbors. When he leaned his head forward on the railing, he was gone. Peter was survived by his wife and by eleven of his children.
