Petoskey News-Review, Monday, October 29, 1990:
Samuel E. Johnston, 78, of Readmond Township, died Oct. 28, 1990, at Little Traverse Division, Northern Michigan Hospitals.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday Nov. 1 at the Stutzmanville Chapel. The Rev. Edward Warner will officiate and burial will be in Readmond Township Cemetery.
Mr. Johnston was born Dec. 4, 1911, in Readmond Township, the son of Robert and Mary (Sheffield) Johnston. He attended and graduated from Harbor Springs High School in 1930. He had worked as a carpenter for his brother in the Good Hart area for many years and had also farmed all of his life.
He married the former Myrtle Kruzell on Jan. 8, 1934, in Harbor Springs.
Mr. Johnston had worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Hodgkiss Co. and had also served as Readmond Township supervisor for many years. He was also township clerk and served on the board of review.
During World War II, he had been a shop instructor in the Civilian Conservation Cops (CCC) camps in Northern Michigan. He was also a member of the Harbor Springs Grange No. 730. He was a charter member of the Readmond-Friendship Firefighters and had donated the property for the fire hall.
He was an avid golfer and was also a square dance caller.
Mr. and Mrs. Johnston had spent the last eight winters in Lutz, Fla.
Mr. Johnston is survived by his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Ed (Sharon) Shepler-Slocum of Harbor Springs, Mrs. Pat (Myrna) Proctor of Harbor Springs and Mrs. Ron (Dixie) Ira of Harbor Springs; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Marvin Johnston of Harbor Springs; three sisters, Berta Mathews and Edna Swiss, both of Harbor Springs and Irene Hickman of Petoskey.
He was preceded in death by one son, Samuel and three brothers, Robert E., Elmer and Roy.
The family suggests memorials to the Readmond-Freindship Firefighters. The family will receive friends at the Johnston home, 8677 Robinson Rd., Harbor Springs, on Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday from noon-9 p.m.
Arrangements are being handled by the Schiller Funeral Chapel, Harbor Springs.
