Sylvia was my grandmother. I have many fond memories of her... The way she always had a smile for you, showing those big dimples, the keen sense of humor she had, always ready to laugh, the ways she worried about all of us daily...She used to say, "Somebody's got to worry! Let me do it. I'm good at it!" Probably the one single thing that reminds me of the love she had for all of us was the ever-present pot of "Grandma Noodles" simmering on the stove upon our arrival. Her house was filled with the aroma of those noodles, beef or chicken depending on her mood. We could hardly wait for her to offer us a bowl and as my children grew, they shared the same excitement about those noodles. Sadly, I have yet to master the art of rolling, cutting and drying noodles, a tradition my children often encourage me to continue. Their Grandma, "Mum", Jackie Reed Burley, who is Sylvia's daughter and my mother, has continued the ritual of simmering noodles so the tradition continues. Today I am making a commitment to learn this simple recipe so I can pass it on to the generations to come.

Sylvia P. White, 83

Sylvia P. White, 83, of Alanson, died March 22, 1995, at the Emmet County Medical Care Facility in Harbor Springs.

A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, March 26, at the Alanson United Methodist Church. The Rev. David Behling will officiate.

Mrs. White was born Oct. 8, 1911, and grew up and attended school in Harbor Springs, graduating from Harbor Springs High School.

On Sept. 19, 1961, she married Wilbur White. He preceded her in death in 1981.

Mrs. White was a longtime resident of Alanson. She loved a good joke and one of her greatest joys was baking for her family.

She enjoyed hunting, fishing and bingo.

Survivors include her son, Philip Reed and his wife, Carol, of Alanson; her daughter, Jackie Burley and her husband, Jack, of Harbor Springs; five grandchildren, Sheryl and Ross Vliestra of Spring Lake, Bryan Burley of Harbor Springs, Mike and Tonya Redd of Hawaii, Kan and Maurika Reed of Oden and Don Reed of Alanson; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Myrtle Ward, of Harbor Springs. In addition to her husband, Mrs. White was preceded in death by her grandson, Douglas Reed.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Emmet County Medical Care Facility.

Arrangements were handled by Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey.

I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways, of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. I'd like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun of happy memories that I leave When life is done.
