Vincent A. Pope

Vincent A. Pope, of Alanson, went to be with the Lord on March 3, 1999, at his daughter's home in Manistee.

He was born Sept. 4, 1916, in Oden, the son of A.H. and Clara Pope. He graduated from Alanson High School and went lo work for A&P.

On July 14, 1938, he and Fanabel Ramsby were married in Petoskey. They were together for 54 years until her death in 1992.

Dad served in the U.S. Army First Infantry Division during World War II. He survived Omaha Beach on D-day and was awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

In 1979, he retired from A&P with 44 years of service and had more time to enjoy square dancing, bridge and traveling with our mother. He also enjoyed his garden, flowers, family and just being outdoors.

Dad was a volunteer driver for the Red Cross and the Friendship Center for many years and an active member of the Methodist Church for most of his life.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Fanny; parents; and brothers, Bernie and Dewey Pope.

He is survived by his brother, Emerson Pope, of Cincinnati. Ohio; his daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Jo and John Engwall of Manistee, Susan and Gary Bondeson of Lansing and Julie and Kurt Edenburn of Manistee; and son and daughter-in-law, Vincent J. and Alice Pope, of Alanson. Thirteen grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren survive along with his "buddies," Abner and Puffy.

Dad was deeply Loved and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey, with visitation from 5-3 p.m. Friday, March 5.

Contributions may be made to the Petoskey Friendship Center in his memory.
